How SDI Advisor Helps You Claim California SDI Benefits for Depression & Anxiety

Expert process guidance for unemployed Californians — at no upfront cost

If you’ve lost your job and depression, anxiety, or PTSD is making it hard to work or search for work, California SDI may provide up to $1,765 per week for up to 52 weeks — significantly more than unemployment. SDI Advisor helps you understand whether you qualify, navigate the process, and get your application filed correctly.

Navigating the California EDD system is genuinely complex — and depression makes every task harder. Our role is to take that complexity off your plate entirely: explaining the process, organizing your paperwork, and keeping your claim on track, while all medical decisions remain with licensed professionals. Check your eligibility first

A note on our role: SDI Advisor provides administrative guidance and process support only. We are not a medical or psychological practice, and we do not diagnose conditions, provide medical opinions, or influence clinical decisions. All medical eligibility determinations are made by licensed professionals and the State of California.

Who We Help — and How We Know If SDI Is Right for You

We work exclusively with California residents who are unemployed or unable to work because of a mental health condition. Most of our clients come to us wanting to:

  • Understand whether SDI or unemployment is the better option for their situation
  • Know whether their depression, anxiety, or PTSD meets the threshold to qualify
  • Get their application filed correctly without having to manage it themselves
  • Avoid the delays, errors, and rejections that come from navigating the EDD system alone
  • Not sure which camp you’re in? Compare SDI vs. unemployment  or call us for a free eligibility review.

Many people we speak with are surprised to learn they may qualify — especially those who assumed unemployment was their only option after a layoff. At the same time, we’re always honest: having symptoms or a diagnosis alone doesn’t guarantee approval. Every claim is evaluated individually by a licensed clinician and the California EDD. See the 4 eligibility requirements

How the California SDI Process Works — Step by Step

Here’s exactly what happens when you work with us — from your first call to your first benefit payment. Most clients are surprised by how manageable it is once someone walks them through it. Read our detailed SDI application guide

Step 1: Free eligibility conversation

We start with a free call — no forms, no commitment. We’ll explain how California SDI works, what eligibility depends on, what the application looks like from start to finish, and whether your situation sounds like a good fit.

This is an administrative and educational conversation only — no medical advice is given. But by the end of it, you’ll know exactly where you stand and what your next steps are.

Step 2: Medical certification — what it involves and how to get it

California SDI requires certification from a licensed physician or mental health professional — this is a non-negotiable part of the process. The good news: you don’t need to have an existing provider to get started.

Some clients already have a doctor or therapist. Others don’t. If you need help finding a licensed provider, we can share general guidance on how to locate one — though all clinical relationships are independent and entirely your choice. All medical decisions remain with your provider, not us.

Step 3: We prepare and submit your application

This is where we take the most off your plate. We identify which forms are required, complete the non-medical portions on your behalf, check everything for common errors that cause delays, and submit your application to the EDD.

Filing incorrectly — or missing a deadline — is one of the most common reasons claims get delayed or denied. We’ve spent years learning exactly what the EDD needs to process a claim smoothly. See what the application process involves

Step 4: We track your claim and handle EDD follow-up

Once your claim is filed, the waiting doesn’t have to be stressful or confusing. We monitor your claim status, translate any EDD notices into plain English, and make sure every deadline and documentation request is handled on time.

You’ll never be left wondering what a letter from the EDD means or what you’re supposed to do next. We stay involved through to approval — and beyond if needed. Please note: we do not influence EDD review timelines or claim decisions.

Step 5: If your claim is delayed or denied — what happens next

Not every claim is approved on the first attempt — and that’s something we’re upfront about. If your claim is delayed or denied, we’ll help you understand exactly what the notice says, what options typically exist, and what the next steps usually look like.

Any formal appeals or updates to medical documentation must be managed directly by you and your licensed provider — but we stay by your side to help you make sense of the process at every stage.

Why Over 1,000 Californians Have Trusted Us Since 2016

We explain things clearly, without pressure.

The SDI system is genuinely confusing. We break it down in plain language — no jargon, no scare tactics, no promises we can’t keep. You’ll leave every conversation knowing more than when you came in.

We’re honest about what we can and can’t do.

We won’t oversell our services or make guarantees we can’t back up. If we don’t think SDI is right for your situation, we’ll tell you that in the first five minutes — and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction anyway.

We focus on what we can control — and we’re very good at it.

We can’t control EDD decisions or guarantee outcomes. What we can control is how organized, complete, and timely your application is. After nearly a decade and over 1,000 claims, we know what the EDD needs to process a claim smoothly.
